DIY Watch Box for Beginners [Step by Step Guide]

Introduction

If you have more than one watch in your possession, you need to have a DIY watch box where you can store them all safely. There are actually a lot of benefits that you can get if you use a watch box for storing your timepieces rather than just letting them lie around in drawers or side tables.

For one, they can keep your watches neat and organized. You can easily pick whichever watch you want to wear without going having to dig around a lot. Similarly, a   DIY watch storage can also save your timepieces from picking up scratches and dents.

Last but not least, a DIY watch case can also give you a nice place to showcase all your watches together.

So, considering all these perks that you can get with a watch box, you may be wondering about getting one yourself.

But, here’s the thing.

Buying a ready-made watch box from the store can be a little expensive. Plus, there’s no fun in getting a pre-made box for your watches because you won’t be able to put your personal touch on the whole thing.

On the other hand, if you decide to make a DIY watch box instead, you can save money and also enjoy something with a personal flair to it.

What is a DIY Watch Box?

A DIY watch box is pretty much any watch box that you make yourself rather than buy it directly from a store.

There are different ways in which you can make a watch case yourself. You can use existing wooden boxes, cardboard and all sorts of other makeshift items.

Basically, for a box to be recognized as a ‘watch box’, it should have sufficient space for holding multiple timepieces and it should also have small, square-shaped sections for separating all the watches from each other.

Now that we’re done with the basic stuff, let’s move on to the actual guide for making a DIY watch box.

How Can I Make a DIY Watch Box?

How Can I Make a DIY Watch Box?

Before you get started with making the watch box, you need to get all the required materials first. Here they are:

  • A wooden box with lid (around 27 x 22 x 8 cm)
  • Sandpaper (optional)
  • A piece of cardboard (around 30 x 30 cm)
  • Glue
  • A thick sheet of paper (you can go for chart paper or art paper)
  • Cutter
  • Scissors
  • Ruler or measuring tape

Once you have all these materials, you can get started with the steps below:

1.  Make Your Box Ready

This is the first thing that you will need to do to build watch display case. Basically, you will have to check and see if your box has any sort of rough edges or surfaces that have to be fixed. If there are, you can smooth them out using sandpaper.

This will most likely be a problem if the box you are using has been made from rough scrap wood.

On the other hand, if you are using a proper wooden box (like an old cutlery set box or something), then you don’t have to worry about this step.

In this step, you can also clean the box and smooth out any sort of logo or writing that may look out of place in a DIY watch organizer.

2.  Cut and Prepare the Cardboard

The cardboard is basically what you will be using for creating the sections in the watch box.

What you need to do here is cut two long pieces of cardboard with the same height and length as that of the inside of the box. In other words, if the length of the box when measured from one inner wall to the other is 27 cm, you will need to cut two pieces of cardboard with the same length. The same goes for the height.

Cut and Prepare the Cardboard

Once you are done cutting these two pieces, you will have to cut two more but this time, you will have to cut them according to the width of the box since these will have to be placed vertically. If, for example, the width of the box is 22 cm, you will need to cut two 22 cm long pieces of cardboard.

Essentially, if you are using a box with the dimensions recommended by us i.e., 27 x 22 x 8 cm, you will need to cut two strips of cardboard measuring 27 x 8 cm and two strips measuring 22 x 8 cm.

Now, all four of these cardboard pieces will be 8 cm wide. What you need to do next is grab the cutter and create two slits in each of the pieces about 4 cm deep.

The slits will have to be equally placed along the length of the pieces of cardboard. For example, in the 27 cm long pieces, you can create the slits at the 9 cm mark and at the 18 cm mark.

After all of this is done, you will need to fit all the pieces of cardboard together to create a grid. Place both 27 mm pieces horizontally and slide their slits into the slits of the 22 cm pieces. You will basically get the same type of grid that you usually make for playing tic-tac-toe.

And with that, your cardboard structure is all done.

3.  Layer the Box with Paper

Once your cardboard grid is ready, you need to layer your DIY watch box with paper to make it look more slightly and aesthetic. Here, you can either use chart paper, art paper or any other sort of similar material.

You will have to layer the inside of the lid as well as the floor of the box. To do that, all you need to do is get the exact measurements of the lid and box’s interior and then cut the paper to those dimensions. You can then glue the paper in place.

(Note: If you want to make your DIY watch box look even more neat and professional, you can use the same paper to layer the cardboard grid as well.)

4.  Glue the Cardboard in Place

After all the layering is done, go ahead and glue the cardboard grid inside the box.

And that is pretty much it. Your DIY watch box is all done and ready.
